Hello Hired is recruiting an experienced Senior Accountant for a confidential client operating within the retail and building materials sector.
This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially minded accounting professional to oversee the financial accounting function within a multi-store retail operation comprising approximately 15 stores.
The successful candidate will play a key role in financial reporting, cost control, management accounting and financial analysis, while leading a finance team of approximately 10 employees. This position requires a hands-on leader who can translate financial information into meaningful insights that support sound business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Compile, analyse and present monthly financial results to senior management.
- Monitor financial performance across approximately 15 stores.
- Identify financial trends, highlight areas of concern and recommend improvements.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Accounting and Financial Controls
- Oversee the general ledger and ensure balance sheet accounts reconcile accurately to the trial balance.
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of accounting records and transactions.
- Implement and maintain effective internal financial controls and accounting procedures.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and statutory requirements.
Debtors, Creditors and Cost Accounting
- Oversee debtors and creditors functions, including outstanding accounts and supplier payments.
- Ensure account queries, discrepancies and outstanding balances are resolved timeously.
- Analyse costs, margins and financial performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve cost control, profitability and operational efficiency.
- Conduct financial benchmarking and provide management with actionable recommendations.
Staff Management and Leadership
- Lead, manage and develop a finance team of approximately 10 employees.
- Allocate responsibilities, monitor performance and ensure departmental objectives are achieved.
- Establish clear procedures, reporting standards and performance expectations.
- Promote accountability, teamwork and continuous improvement.
Minimum Requirements
- BCom Accounting degree.
- Relevant experience in a senior accounting or financial management role.
- Proven experience in management accounting and cost accounting.
- Experience overseeing debtors, creditors and general accounting functions.
- Strong knowledge of balance sheet reconciliations and trial balance reviews.
- Experience preparing and presenting monthly management reports.
- Proven staff management and leadership experience.
- Strong financial analysis, reporting and benchmarking capabilities.
Experience in a multi-branch or multi-store retail environment will be advantageous.

You should be comfortable managing large volumes of financial data, leading a finance team and presenting financial results to senior management. A proactive approach to problem-solving, cost management and improving financial performance will be essential.
